Tinsel, Tipples & Trouble: HR’s Festive Headaches
December. The month of seasonal hazards. Yes, it’s time for the annual festive celebrations, along with the inevitable seasonal issues. HR teams … brace yourselves!
We discussed social media slip-ups in the summer. They appear again at Christmas, condensed into a far shorter period as everyone wants the same few days off.
Sadly, the same silliness seems to happen each year. Here are the festive faux pas HR teams need to watch for and address. Get ready!
- Sassy Secret Santa
Secret Santas can be great fun… until they become a grievance. Colleagues may not appreciate underwear, a political mug or a tacky, gawdy gift. Especially if they’ve paid for a lovely present! It’s best to set the ground rules and keep the gifts neutral. If in doubt, don’t buy it … or sack Secret Santa.
- Objectionable Office Party Behaviour
Every Christmas, at least one employee drunkenly decides that right now is the moment they simply must:
- Make a “joke” that’s inappropriate
- Announce their love to a colleague
- Tell their manager what they really think
- Drive home
Employers, be aware – you still have a duty of care off-site and out of hours. Yes, even at the pub.
- Forced Festivity
Festive fun should be optional, inclusive and accessible. There’s no place for compulsory cheer. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Not everyone can attend late-night events. Not everyone wants to wear a jumper that lights up.
- Alcohol Awareness
From overindulgence to respecting those who don’t drink alcohol … ensure that alcohol doesn’t cause awkwardness. This includes advising against alcohol-based gifts.
- Yes, it Counts!
Company policies apply at the office party, at the pub, on the dancefloor and in the Uber on the way home. Communicate this clearly beforehand. It may seem boring, but it’s essential risk management.
One extra problem to mention … mistletoe. Don’t go there. Simple.
‘The festive season should bring joy, not grievances, legal risks and Monday morning panic,’ says Emma Clack of Heneom HR near Welwyn and Stevenage in Herts. ‘With a bit of planning, clear communication and respect for everyone’s boundaries, your team can celebrate in style without the extra HR headaches.’
